98 blazer w/4wd issues

Hey all,
I have a 98 blazer, 4.3L, 4wd with 95000 miles. The indicator lights in the 4wd push button control panel go on and off intermittantly. When the lights are on everything works just fine. When the lights are out I am unable to do anything with the 4wd. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Thanks, Harry

Re: 98 blazer w/4wd issues

Hi.
Thanks for your reply. Sorry I did not give enough info. It's automatic push button. I don't think the type of transfer case really matters here. I am no professional in these matters but If the xfer type is really needed to diagnose the problem, then I will find out for you. It really appears to be an electrical problem to me. I'm thinking either an intermittent elec supply or ground problem. I was hoping I would hear from someone who has had this problem.

Thanks, Harry

You are welcome.
We need to ID transfer case before we can help you.

236 has a shift button that says auto 4W on it.

Unless a late 98 they did not use a 236 in 98.

What is 1o digit in vin and build date?
What is ID tag transfer case no.?

If a 236 transfer case you will need a engine transmission/transfer case scanner to test it out and get codes.
If any codes post back codes.

It is hard to match your problems to someone else's problems because most problems arer different caused by different things.

Give us you transfer case ID and codes and someone can help you.

Re: 98 blazer w/4wd issues

Hello. Thanks again for your reply. The VIN # is 1GNDT13W7W2170651. I don't know which is the 1o number. I live in Maine. There is considerable corrosion on the round aluminum ID tag.
The info on the xfer case is:
C-16117AE
09104
10 Syracruse NY.
The only info I can read on the ID tag is the first line: 233-C.

Thanks, Harry

You have a 233 transfer case,
To pull codes on it ground pin 13 on the diagnostic connector and turn key on and count flashes on shift button lights count toltal falashes and the pause and flashes.
Also when shift button lights are out check fuse and power and ground to switch and transfer case computer.
Post back flashes.

Re: 98 blazer w/4wd issues

Hey MT-2500. I really appreciate the help you have given me so far. I jumped pin 13 to ground and turned on the ignition. I got no lights on the 4wd panel. I need to back track to check for power and ground. The fuse is good. I'm thinking it may be a faulty ground. Could you tell me where the 4wd brain is located?

Thanks, Harry

Re: 98 blazer w/4wd issues

MT,
The 4wd lights do not come on (presently) during bulb check. The lights do come on, while driving, intermittantly. I will check all the fuses (both sides) w/key on.

Thanks, Harry

If light are not working on key on bulb test you can not get codes.
Get a wiring diagram and check light circuits from push button switch to transfer case computer.
And do a voltage pin out voltage test on the transfer case computer.
Coming and going may be a bad pugin or connection.
