I've got a 2001 4wd Chevy Blazer with 102kmiles. It recently had the fuel pump, radiator, idler & pitman arms, and corroded battery cable replaced. After the batter cable was replaced we went to start the car, it started fine but after we put in in gear, it promptly died.
Any ideas what may be causing this issue? |

Re: 01 Blazer starts then dies when put in gear
It may take a couple minutes to relearn idle?

I'll give that a shot tonight... I don't know that I gave it long enough before shifting into gear. And I know with other cars I've had you have to give it 5minutes with no accessories on, then 5minutes with the AC on...

As said give it time to relearn. Try giving it some gas before you put it in gear and if it goe drive it some. Any check engine lights or codes? And check that fuel pressure. The only true test on a fuel pump is to check the direct fuel pressure from fuel pump. A quick test is to block off the return line and see if fuel pressure comes up to 75-85 lbs. But do not run the pump at full pressure very long. Also when testing fuel pump and pressure you need to tape a gauge to outside windshield or outside mirror and drive it on the road for 20 -30 minutes until the pump gets has run a while to check for a pump fading out after hot. Hard to start cold or hot and fuel pressure testing guide lines. Check cold start fuel pressure. Check engine running fuel pressure. Check engine running on the road fuel pressure. Then shut it off and watch for fast leak down. Pinch off at rubber part or block off return line and check full pressure. If pump has full pressure with return line blocked and low pressure without it blocked most usually the fuel pressure regulator is leaking or not holding pressure. Later V6 and V8 gm engines should have 60-66 fuel pressure. Cold start should be 64-65 lbs of pressure. If you do not have full fuel pressure on a cold start the injectors will not squirt fuel. Do not leave home without it. Engine running should be 60-66 lbs pressure depending on engine load. Full pressure with return pinched off should be 75-85 or more. And if it has a fast leak down after shut off you have a leak in system. Post back fuel pressure readings.

Re: 01 Blazer starts then dies when put in gear
No codes or lights. I'll check the pressure again tonight. When we replaced the pump a few weeks ago (with a new factory part) it was getting full 65psi on cold start and no fading when hot. I'm starting to think most likely cause is it just needs more time to relearn. I'll pull the battery again and give it another shot. Thanks for the help

Re: 01 Blazer starts then dies when put in gear
Thanks for the info - It was just needing longer to relearn. I let it run for 30 minutes yesterday and drove it around for 30 with no problems. Started like a dream this morning also. Problem solved.

It could just be a slow learner. Or you could have spiked the pcm a little. When unkooking a battery always remove neg cabel first and hook it up last. Good Luck
