Power steering gear box--99' GCL
Replaced the power steering pump, that was slightly leaking, but not the main cause of the hard to turn issue, figured it was the gear box itself (still making the little hissing sounds when turning and hard to steer at low speeds or trying to park).
So what's involved to replace? Seems to me, there's the Pitman arm and keeping the steering wheel fixated during the removal and replacement process. Anything else to watch for? |

Re: Power steering gear box--99' GCL
I just worked on my mother in laws's 01 GC that was leaking power steering fluid out of the the gear box. The fluid was running out of the output shaft that the pitman arm goes on. I bought a seal kit from Advance Auto for $15 that included two shaft seals, a steel washer, and a large snap ring clip. I pulled the pitman arm off and clean everything up, and I couldn't find any snap ring or anything in there. For lack of anything better to do I greased up the seals and stuffed them into the gearbox and put the pitman arm back on. So far so good. I realize it's not the way to rebuild a gearbox, but it quit leaking fluid, and I didn't have to replace the whole gearbox for $300. Hopefully it holds up!

Re: Power steering gear box--99' GCL
I did mine about 1 year ago. There is a snap ring under a seal that is kinda hard to get off. I drilled mind an popped it out. Works great no more leaks.

Re: Power steering gear box--99' GCL
Replace the power steering box,not worth replacing the seal and do it right the first time.I see that and customer gets talked into a reman box instead of replacing the seal.I have seen them come back leaking, seal blows out
