Lightbulb Rod Knock?

Alright, I have a 1999 Honda Passport (Isuzu Rodeo) with a 3.2L V6 engine, it seems to be burning oil as i was TWO quarts low when I heard a knocking, I changed the oil immediately and now there is a slight knock which seems to come from the engine at 1500 rpm only, not at idle. The interesting thing is, today I was annoyed enough to just drive down my street in reverse (no knock in reverse) and the knock lessened in sound, and also only occurs now at 2500 rpm in drive. One last part of the scenario, whenever I shut off the engine at idle(no knock) there is one knock, as if something is falling. So is this rod knock or not? Also why has it started to occur at a higher rpm and not nearly as loud?

Re: Rod Knock?

Check your timing belt tensioner. It's on the right side of the engine under the timing cover. You can usually get the right side timing cover off pretty easily.

Re: Rod Knock?

A bad rod/rod bearing will knock ALL of the time, not just every now and then. Check your belt tensioner. It's a common issue with these.

also, I have no idea what oil you're using but a quality diesel service oil (API CJ-4 rated) will do great in this engine. I use Rotella T but any major oil company diesel oil will be good. The diesel oils still have the detergents in them that will help keep your oil passages clean. Lubrication is critical on the motor so help it out! You won't regret it! Keep check on your oil level. These engines do use some oil and a quuart or 2 between changes is VERY common! (some go thru more)

Re: Rod Knock?

Well bad news on this front, the sound has become frequent even at idle, it'll be in the shop in a week. I've got an honest mechanic in mind so I will let you know whats going on as soon as its taken apart.

Re: Rod Knock?

Steady knock at idle usually means bearing. (or sometimes wrist pin)
