Speed sensor
I also have 1999 Durango and my check engine light came on. I took the car to Auto Zone, they put the machine on and got the code that it was the speed sensor.
Could someone please tell me exactly where this sensor is and how to replace it? The repair cost is unbelievable. It this just some type of plug or something or does other parts have to be removed to get to it? Help? |

Re: Speed sensor
the speed sensor is on the side of the transmission. it's basiclly a plastic piece that screws in and is connected to a wire

ABS and Brake Light On, 2000 Durango
My 2000 Durango had the ABS and Brake light illuminated last week. Turns out it indicated a problem with the ABS speed sensor that is located on top of the rear differential. The part number for the 2000 Dodge Durango is P/N 56028187AE, cost is a list price of $35.50 from Dodge dealer in Austin.
The dealer said they get to replace quite a few of these sensors, so this is common. I would do this prior to having a dealer tell you the ABS computer needs replacement ($$$). I used the following information to replace (required about 30 mintues of time during my lunch hour). 1. Disconnect negative battery terminal 2. Remove 13 MM top using deep box wrench. Remove the cable bracket attached at this point and move out of the way slightly. 3. Remove 14 MM bottom nut/bolt using deep box wrench. 4. Press connector with thumb and pull connector off sensor (2 wires) 5. Wiggle sensor up along with the metal bracket that goes around the sensor. 6. Dip finger in hole and put differential oil on O ring on new sensor 7. Push sensor new in metal bracket and bolt in. 8. Put ignition key in and turn to on position for 30 seconds. Step on the brake pedal at this point to put a current drain on the computer system (assures a reset condition) 9. Reconnect negative post of car battery 10. Important Note: the fault (ABS and brake) did not go out until I started to drive the car (about 10 seconds). Just setting still, the light did not go out which made me concern that this did not repair the problem. But it did. That is all there is to it. |

Your description is quite correct for replacing the REAR DIFFERENTIAL speed sensor that gives the ABS and brake light malfunction (also causes speedometer to misbehave).
However, deedee said the problem is a CHECK ENGINE light; did not say ABS and Brake lights were lit. Unless we weren't given all the information, the speed sensor in question should be the TRANSMISSION speed sensor. You are quite correct to say tackle these before getting involved with any computers. Dave Westminster, MD USA |

Durango
Greetings, All, New to the site.
Just an FYI, Speed sensors, I have found go out at around an average of 60000-70000 miles or so. For the novices, when you go to get the part, specify a "Vehicle Speed Sensor." To answer your question there, Bud, It's located in the tail and has a small cluster plug with three wires. The best I had to get to it was an oil sensor socket, and it was a tight fit, but that was all I had. I'm sure someone out there has a better, more applicable tool to use. I did mine, reset the computer, and all was well. Good luck to all. JA |

I had the very same problem as ghinkle. ABS, brake and later engine light came on also would not mark the speed. Luckily the O'rielly person said that the speed sensor that was in the trans had nothing to do w/ ABS. My husband followed your steps EXACTLY and all is well. I hope it continues to solve the prob. Also he is not a BIG man so he was able to do this work without even jacking up the vehicle. THANKS GHINKLE you saved us a pretty penny.

Re: Speed sensor
Input or output speed sensor? a 1" deep socket will get them out most of the time. Sometimes a 1" wrench.
They are common in all the chrysler vehicles!
