Re: rear lights inop
I had similar problem with bad connection in bulb (over the time the lead became squished); I changed the bulb and it was O.K. ever since.

Re: rear lights inop
I have a 99 passat just at the dealer yesterday for an oil change and they noticed my tail lights not working. They diagnosed the headlight switch faulty, new part $201.00. The old switch is not repairable as it is a circuit type switch(electronic). All other lights working, just not tail lights.

Re: rear lights inop
FYI. I replaced the headlight switch with a used one back then and it was working fine for a year until now. The problem now is the driver side headlight stopped working. Have tried to replace headlight but no change. I think it is the headlight switch again.
