Should I change my transmission filter and gasket on my own??

Is it really hard or easy. I am mechanically inclined and change my own oil and things of that nature. I read up on the filter change and it seems relatively easy.

Any advice, would be helpful. thans

Go ahead and change it yourself. It isn't hard to do but make sure you use the right type of fluid for your transmission. Also, be careful when you drop the pan as it can get very messy. Also make sure the gasket stays in place. They can be tricky.

It is easy but messy.What year is it?If it about 1994 and up,has a resusable pan gasket and do not throw the reusable pan gasket away reusing it.I do like the reusable pan gasket,does not leak if in great shape.

If you do it yourself, there is a seal on the tube of the screen that will be up inside the housing that sometimes doesn't come out with the screen, just make sure you get that seal out before you install the new screen and seal. Sometimes it will stick and you'll have to pull it out with a bent hook. You'll see the seal on your new screen, just be sure it is removed. Go for it, you can do it. Don't get too strong on those pan bolts.

If the seal for the filter is in good shape and still holds the filter in place,do not mess with it.I have done them this way and never had a filter come out.

Your going to get a new seal with the new screen, why not use it?

Because they are a real pain to put in and I go by this if the seal is still good: If there is nothing wrong with it,leave it alone.

well I decide to take it to the local shop and have them do it. They changed filter and drained it. They said the gasket that came with the new filter was crap and left the old one in. It is reusable so that's cool.

I wasn't talking about the pan gasket, it's the rubber seal on the filter. I told you "that if you change it yourself to make sure you dig the old seal out of the trans filter housing because they have a tendency to stay in the housing and the new filter has the seal on the new filter. If you try to install the new filter with the new seal on and the old seal is still in the housing it will not go up far enough to hold the new filter in the correct position. I was just trying to help you avoid a problem. Good luck.

just one more thing did they tell you if it had many metal shavings in it? theres always some i check mine by putting a magnet in pan and see how many shavings are in it every time i change all the filters i do on tranny.

I never have a problem putting in the new filter with the old seal and seat in right when I install them.I tried putting in one of those seals once,a royal pain in the butt which the seal bent up on me.Most transmission shops do not buy the filter kits,buy a dozen filters at a time as bulk from any transmission parts places since it is not worth buying the kit at a time.Most 4T60Es and 4T65Es have a magnet sticking on the pan from the factory.

well a few days now and I had to take it back in, it started leaking worse this time. I told the guy to do it again and I provided him with a NEW Gasket this time. The rubber type with the metal screw holes. I was told never to use cork.

I pick it up today, see what happe4ns.

It is so heard to find a good place for car repairs. That is why I do as much as I can myself. I save money and I know that I did the job myself. But I do have to be careful not to re-injury my back, so I am limited to what I can handle.

Yeah, I should have done it myself too. After taking it back the second time and purchasing the OEM gasket, the tranny no longer leaks. I guess the original gasket was warped or something, who knows. I kept it and it doesn't seems to show any sighns of damage, but I haven't inspected it closely yet.

I am gonna invest in a good jack and jack stands from now on.
