Driver Side Door Window
I've spent a lot of time recently wrestling with the driver's side door window in my '99 Grand Prix GT (K version). It works for a few days, then sticks fully closed. I've taken out the regulator and motor. Both seem to work okay when disconnected from the window. I've lubed the regulator, window tracks, and replaced the window switch. I'm beginning to think that the motor may be breaking down under load. Any thoughts?

Re: Driver Side Door Window
Your probably on the right track with a motor issue.

Re: Driver Side Door Window
Also it is possible for the switches to have a problem too. My passenger front door window stopped opening for quite a long time. Then out of the blue starting working again. I took out the switch assy and sprayed the switches with electrowash. Then used Craig labs deoxit on the switch contacts and had no more problems. I did all four of the switches.

Re: Driver Side Door Window
I've replaced the switch with a new one, so I think it's okay. I'm looking for a reasonably priced reliable window regulator and motor. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Re: Driver Side Door Window
That's the brand I've been looking at. It's good to hear that someone has had a positive experience with Dorman.
Thanks! |

Re: Driver Side Door Window
They make a lot of good products and only a few that are questionable.

Re: Driver Side Door Window
I've had the same problems that you are having. At first I bought some replacement parts from ebay because it was half the price compared to parts from an auto part store, but the parts from ebay only lasted me two and a half weeks before it died on me. I eventually got some Dormans from Autozone and it's been fine since July.

Re: Driver Side Door Window
I bought one from fleabay for the wife's truck. The window was stuck down during last winter. That one was better then the OEM one that I bought and installed 2 summers ago. Which was driver's side window that I replaced. The fleabay one is much faster and stronger then the OEM. The passenger side I also replaced with an OEM and now it will not open all the way. It will open maybe 1/4 and starts to make a grinding noise like the gears are slipping. So I will stay away from the OEM replacement window regulators. Quality is crap and you do not get what you pay for.

Re: Driver Side Door Window
I have to say that I normally stay away from non-OEM parts, but I took a chance on the Dorman window regulator and motor. It took me less than an hour to remove the old one, install the new and button everything back up. Of course, I've had soooooo much practice working on this thing now that I can probably due it in my sleep! Anyway, the new regulator and motor work very well. Let's see how they hold up.

Re: Driver Side Door Window
I usually do to, using OEM parts too. Doing the window in the wife's truck it only took me about 45 minutes give or take a few. It is second nature now. I still have to do the passenger side window I think I will order from the same place that I ordered the driver's side door. It was with free shipping. It will not take me that long to do. I use the blue painters masking tape to hold the window up. That way I do not worry about the window falling down and shattering. The driver's side it holding up very well. I am very pleased with the performance and reliability.
