Ball Like Vacuum Canister

1997 GP SE 3800 - Under the left side front fender there is a round ball-like container with at least 1 vacuum line attached to it. This was damaged in a minor accident. What is this? Is this a necessary component to replace? Or can the vacuum line(s) be plugged and everything will run ok? I'm thinking it has to do with the emission system. Thanks.......

Mainly, it is used to provide a vacuum source to the HVAC system to control the actuators under the dash and keep vacuum up to accessories during low engine vacuum periods like when going up a long steep grade. Around '98 and up the ball reservoir under the fender was eliminated and the reservoir was moved to under the dashboard.
