2000 grand am a/c evaporator removal

I have 2000 grand am 4 cylinder 2.4 liter and I want to replace a/c evaporator.

Please tell me how I do this as Hayness manual has no info for removal.

I think it is leaking and want to replace it.
Please reply.
Thanks.

Re: 2000 grand am a/c evaporator removal

It might be better to use some UV dye and find the leak, rather then just throwing money at it..

As for removing this its in the pass front fender. Have to drop the plastic splash panels and anything else in the way. The r34a should also be collected but I'd assume its leaked out

Hope that helps

I did try the UV dye and got the refrigerant charged. I do not see any leaks ...but the refrigerant is gone and compressor does not kick in any more. So I thought the leak may be inside on evaporator.

Re: 2000 grand am a/c evaporator removal

Well chances are it might not be the evaperator leaking, it could also be the compressor leaking/bad. Both very expensive IMO.

But as I stated about its pretty easy to remove the evaporator. Just drop the lower splash panels and the fenderwell cover(plastic) Might even pull the pass side headlight to get a better view of the mounting bracket. And just remember where everything goes.

Also The reason your manual doesnt explain much is they dont realy want consumers messing with the AC, it can be dangerous if its pressurised.

Re: 2000 grand am a/c evaporator removal

Thanks for the advive. I replaced the a/c compressor and the condensor in the front. I removed from the junkyard. The a/c works fine now.

One question on the side. The mileage seems very bad...where shall I start....Plugs ...injectors...o2 sensors...Tranny oil.
Please suggest.
Thanks.
Jay
