Need advice; 97 GA 2.4L twin cam

I previously began this thread when I thought I had a timing issue: http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...d.php?t=966455

The timing was the issue, after replacing the timing chain, gears, guides, and tensioner, I'm now presented with another problem with this engine. At idle this motor purr's, however it has a loud knock before it shifts, around 2400-2800 rpm. My question is this, am I probably looking at damage to the valves and if so would that cause the knock I hear? I realize where I'm going with this head, but I'm trying to narrow down the possibilities. I also realize its kind of hard to diagnose without actually hearing the knock, but I'm interested in knowing if anyone else has ever had a timing issue and a knock once repaired. I have been told that the bottom half of these motors are pretty solid, so I'm hoping I'm not looking at pulling the block. Any suggestions??
