Re: 98 3.8L GL Transmission Leak
FORD issued a TSB that states that Mercon V is now to be used in all years of windstar.
This supercedes earlier TSBs that said to use only Mercon in older windstars (like my '96). They have stopped licensing the Mercon. I feel completely confident in using the Mercon V fluid. I can understand a shop being reluctant to replace that seal......you shell out $520 to replace the seal...on a old, high mileage transmission......and a month later your transmission fails with major repair needed.......and the customer is back expecting a free repair. Check for any motor oil leakage at the motor rear crankshaft seal while you have the transmission removed...... I do not know what all would be involved in replacing it at this point.....but the whole job lists at 6.4 hours for the rear crankshaft seal ONLY. They call for a special "Jet Plug Remover" tool P/N T77L-9533-B to remove the seal and a "Rear Main Seal Replacer" tool P/N 782L-6701-A to install the new seal.

Re: 98 3.8L GL Transmission Leak
I'm finally going to try to fix this thing.
AAMCO quoted me $650 to replace all the transmission seals and will tow it from my house. Said they could do it in a day. It had very few miles on it and shifted fine when filled with fluid, even after the leak so I'm pretty confident there's no mechanical damage. Hopefully it was just a bad pump seal. I'll get them to check out the cooler lines too. :crossing fingers: |

Re: 98 3.8L GL Transmission Leak
I just got a call from AAMCO, they said the pump seal was the source of the leak and that it was caused by a groove in the torque converter, and that would cost an additional $250 to replace.
Does this make any sense or is he just trying to get more money out of me? |
