Broken VR4

Sup Drivers,
I recently bought a 91 GTO in atlanta, georgia. The car had a new engine in 03 with 60 T miles and for the past year prior to me buying it was in storage. I flew to atl from norfolk, virginia and drove it back. The car was fine and what I assumed was safe to drive back in one piece. 11 hours and 850 miles later, home sweet home. Next day i took it on a joyride and the worst happened.

While driving in a residential area, I was in first and second and started to hear a small ticking noise in sync with the engine. When I was headed home, i got on a highway and shifted to third and then the VR4 shutdown. Started it back up and the ticking noise was about 4 times louder than the engine. FCUK!

I got home finally only on 1st and 2nd gear and 7 shutdowns later. After i parked, a good bit of stream was escaping the car. I just went to sleep and cried that night.

Next day after inspecting, no oil, no coolant and the radator hose was broken from the radiator. Please share some advice. I really don't want to buy a new engine.

Re: Broken VR4

running without oil and coolant is no good man...sounds like you fried it. After the first shutdown and the ticking you should have checked everything over.

put oil in it, and IF it still turns over do a compression test...but you most likely did serious damage.

Took it straight out of storage onto an 850 mile trip?

You need a rebuild from the sounds of things.

Re: Broken VR4

i didnt even think a car would run without oil in it, let alone no oil AND no coolant. dam. but you definitely should have checked it out immediately instead of restarting it 7 times and continuing to drive home

Re: Broken VR4

not coolant, no oil, new motor needed.

no lights ever came on though, no oil light, or low coolant, what about the gauges? they never went above normal temp, or low oil pressure?

i would say, for the salvage of it, do an oil drain(see what comes out, if anything) put new filter and oil in, replace the hose, add coolant, and start it, not with turbo cars, but i've heard of worse ending up with nothing wrong.

note: if what comes out of the oil drain, looks completely burned and smells it, don't waste yourself on the new oil.

Re: Broken VR4

sorry, but you need a new engine. It could have had a small leak that progressively got worse on the ride home. Or, you more than likely could have overheated it, seized something up, threw a rod through the block/pan, and that's why you have no oil in the engine.

It could be a million reasons. BUt you absolutely need an entire new engine... top to bottom. There's no rebuilding the one you have now, sorry.
