'93 Accord-poor running/driveability after removing throttle body?
Hey all,
Having problems with my '93 Accord EX 5 speed wagon. With 224K, the original radiator died, so while in there, I replaced all the clamps and hoses. I had removed the throttle body for access to the heater hoses against the firewall, and cleaned the TB with carb. and choke cleaner. Once it was all buttoned up and started, (carb. cleaner had evaporated) there was an immediate obvious problem. It gagged and sputtered, and emitted a backfiring noise from the air cleaner when I "gave it gas". I adjusted the air filter and checked for loose vacuum lines or connections. Finding nothing loose, I restarted it and drove around the block, letting it come to operating temperature. It hesitates badly when taking off from a stop, and bitched and sputtered till I hit 2nd , then smooths out and runs fine while moving. The backfiring stopped, but it still has a very throaty, gasping suction noise form the air cleaner. It hitches if you punch the gas at an idle. Also, I noticed no cooling fans coming on. Today when I got home form work, it ran the same, but after being shut off, the cooling fans kicked off and on intermittently for about 10 minutes. I unhooked the battery trying to reset the ECM, but it did nothing. It acts the same way it does when the idle air temp. valve carbons up, like it's running out of gas. Someone here helped me track that down awhile back, but the IAT was just replaced....again....before the radiator. Any ideas, please? There's nothing loose or kinked or unplugged that I see, and no check engine light.

Did you reuse the old gasket?

Re: '93 Accord-poor running/driveability after removing throttle body?
I saw no gasket when I pulled it off. That was something I wondered though, is there supposed to be a gasket? I guarantee I'm not the 1st to have this TB off....can I use gasket compound, or do I need to buy a one? It seems to run OK now after the battery was unhooked, and it sat overnight, just has a little hitch when leaving a stop.

Spray or pour water around the TV while idling...if it's sucking air the engine speed will react when it pulls it into the leak...
No CEL coming on while this is happening?

Re: '93 Accord-poor running/driveability after removing throttle body?
I'll give the water trick a shot Jeff. Is there supposed to be a gasket on the TB?
No, there's no engine light at all, which is the same thing it does when the IAT screws up. Come to think of it, you may be the one who helped me with that gremlin. It ran fine before the repair, and is now back to just bogging down when taking off in 1st. Wonder if I should pull the IAT off and clean it again? |
