On a per capita basis, the United States does indeed have a lower crime rate than a lot of other countries.
Thing is, those stats are based on what each country considers crime.
If you look at individual stats of higher profile crimes, things tend to even out.

Not sure how up to date these are.

And as as you said, I don't see Canada being ranked higher than the US in anything other than burglaries.

Realistically, it is most relevant to compare the US to other industrialized first-world nations, such as western Europe , Canada, Australia, NZ etc.

Many other nations, in Africa, Eastern Europe etc do not have accurate stats, due to a lack of honest law enforcement infrastructure, poor information-gathering techniques, lack of crime reporting etc etc. Comparing their rates to that of the US is apples and oranges.

For example, I have good friends who live in Moscow and family living in Argentina and Chile. All of them say Canada has far lower crime, but a much higher incidence of reporting it.... so Canadian crime stats are higher by comparison. They say petty crime in their countries goes unreported because there are fewer cops, the cops can't do anything anyways and a culture of fear of the police due to corruption etc.

FWIW, I hope wafrederick takes note. As a Canadian gun enthusiast (but not an owner), I am embarrassed by such radical, distorted, irresponsible posts such as his.
Such attitudes polarize the issue, discredit gun-owners and only provide fuel to the gun-banning activists.

Imho, it is sad that a great nation such as the US has millions of people who feel they need handguns to defend themselves.
Imo, it's much better to live in a place like Canada, with very, very few handguns.

Canada is a demonstrably safer place to live, nobody legally uses guns for self-defence (cops, military and some security staff aside) because no one feels the need to do so. Yet there are millions of legally-owned rifles and shotguns here (About 1 for every 3.5 people). We just use them to plug geese, ducks and deer, not people.

I am not smoking anything and it has been proven.Since Michigan started with the concealed weapons laws,crime went down and a study has proven this.In the state of Michigan,it is legal to shoot a criminal if being threatened by them.Texas is the same way,crime rate down since they have a concealed weapon law too.President Obama is not my president,the president of the NRA is my president.Look at the record of our president when he was a state senator in Illinois,he voted yes on most gun bans and bills that would make it illegal to shoot an intrudor.The NRA even said they would rate the new supreme court judge whom is now the new a new supreme court judge Obama nominated,she hates guns.

I have a recommendation for you (I am a journalist, for what it's worth).

Do some research on Sotomayor and see what multiple sources say about her beliefs about the 2nd amendment instead of reading a PRO-GUN RIGHTS MAGAZINE and taking their words as law on the issue.

Of course an NRA magazine will nail Sotomayor if she even suggests she has reservations about current gun laws.

Only allowing yourself to see one side of the argument doesn't make you right, it just makes you uninformed and unwilling to have a legitimate discussion. I'll be honest, if you came up to me and said "I'd like to talk to you about gun rights and how this woman who was just elected to the supreme court wants to take them away," and then told me that you were basing your argument on what you read in the NRA magazine, I would walk away.

Long story short: Try engaging in some discussion instead of looking through NRA-colored glasses.
