replaced timing chain but still flopping around
Hi i have a 95 22re that wouldnt idle and makes a bad noise from the chain grinding the valve cover and timing chain cover when you rev it to make it run so i checked the guides and everything was fine but valve cover had some wear from the timing chain so i replaced the timing chain and components with a kit, wouldnt you know it does the same damn thing.I messed around with the timing a tooth over here and there but nothing worked.i am mechanicaly inclined since it is a family trade but i am no expert.any advice as what i should do next would be greatly appreciated

Re: replaced timing chain but still flopping around
Where is the wear do you have end thrust and the pulley rubbing or is the chain loose and slapping the side.
Normally their is some adjustment for the guides. |

Re: replaced timing chain but still flopping around
There is no adjustment on the guides of a 22R TC. There is a hydraulic tensioner, which would be replaced as part of the TC kit. The oil passage to the tensioner could be clogged, which would cause the old and new chains to have too much play and slap. Pull the valve cover and grab the TC to check for play and tension. And put the TC back on aligned right.

Re: replaced timing chain but still flopping around
There is some adjustment room on the timing chain guides. by any chance did you replace the chain only or did your kit include the guides / tensioner? If it did not it may be you tensioner. Another possibility is your head may have been machined in the past. a simple measuring check should determine this. only problem is that you will have to open her back up and thats a pain and more gaskets. if it has been machined you will need to get a shim for your head to make up the differance. I hope this was helpful.

Re: replaced timing chain but still flopping around
thanks for the help.the kit included chain, tensioner, crank&cam gear, guides, gaskets.i was wondering could it be electrical.when i had the disributer out and the ignition turned on,the coil would make a zapping or shorting noise when i spun the rotor.i am not sure if that is normal or not.

Re: replaced timing chain but still flopping around
Run the vehicle at night and observe the coil for arcing. I would fix this problem first. Normally if you look closely if the chain is rubbing wear will be noticed.

Re: replaced timing chain but still flopping around
Normally it's not a good idea to play with the cap and rotor while it's hooked up without the plugs hooked up and grounded since it really screws with the coil among other things. It might be a good idea to see how the whole ingnition setup works when it's all hooked up correctly. If it still arcs/pops, definately do the check as stated above...
