So, my '08 Prix has no external fuel filter
So, my '08 Grand Prix doesn't seem to have an external fuel filter. My son's '04, which is the similar body style, has the usual GM fuel filter back by the rear wheel. But mine just has fuel lines, no filter.
Any thoughts on why they did this? My concern is if the external filters get clogged and need changing somewhere around 75-100K, what prevents the internal ones from clogging? I assume the filter is in the fuel tank. Any ideas?

Re: So, my '08 Prix has no external fuel filter
Your assumption is correct. There is no external fuel filter anymore. Neither one of my '08 GXPs have one. I don't think there is a fuel filter per se in the gas tank with the fuel pump assembly either but only the filter sock at the fuel pump is being used.

Re: So, my '08 Prix has no external fuel filter
I believe the external fuel filters were discontinued after the 2005 model year. (GM refers to them as "non serviceable") Without an external filter it is more important now than ever to try and keep dirt and debris from getting in the fuel tank and eventually clogging the sock inside the tank. A couple of ways to do this is to not let your fuel level drop below a quarter tank, and avoid fueling up at a gas station that is receiving a load of fuel at the same time. While the fuel is being put into the underground tanks, sediment within the tanks is stirred up and the filters that are on the gas pumps only do so much to filter it out before it gets to your fuel tank.

Re: So, my '08 Prix has no external fuel filter
Wow. Any ideas why this decision was made after decades of having an external fuel filter?

Re: So, my '08 Prix has no external fuel filter
Probably one of the reasons was so that the dealers could make more money on repairs since the labor costs are more to R&R the tank versus a simple external fuel filter replacement.
![]() EDIT: Although in the Northern US where road salt is used , it sure was a pain to try and remove the external filter once it has rusted in place. Many times the line would snap or crease and you'd end up turning a simple job into a more complex, time consuming adventure. Now we don't have those worries
