rebuilt vs reconditioned transmission
Only two months after purchasing a 1998 Lincoln continental it seems the transmission has gone. The gears are slipping when driving and there is fluid on the driveway. It seems I have several options and I would like some advice on what to do. Do I let the garage rebuild the transmission that I have ($1,200) or do I have the garage put in a reconditioned transmission est ($2,800)? This is a huge expense that I did not expect and I have to keep the car as I have a loan on it and could not sell now as it is. Many thanks in advance for your advice.

Excuse me, but what the heck is a 'reconditioned' transmission? There is very little reconditioning that can be done... about all you can do is change the fluid and filter, and check line pressure... such work is cheap to do, and certainly not worth $2800!!
Any further repairs pretty much get you into a rebuild. Imo the reconditioned transmission is way too expensive. A remove and reinstall should cost about $350-500. So where is the rest of the money going? The remaining $2300 could buy you one heck of a rebuilt transmission. Imo since you have a loan on the car, you probably want to keep it for a while, right? if so, do the job right. Get a rebuilt transmission, with a new torque converter and warranty... ($1200 is a good price for this), then budget another $500 for installation... $1700 total. Paying anything more is a rip off. If your mechanic wants to rip you off, go to another shop - fast.
