99 MGM, White smoke = Coolant = Head Gasket/Cracked block

1999 Gr Marquis, 4.6L, V8... Lots of white smoke and condensate ("condensation") from both tailpipes. I know white smoke is indicitave of coolant getting into places it shouldn't be and Im told that its undoubtedly a head gasket issue or cracked block.
As w/ many of us, in this economy, there is NO POSSIBLE WAY I can afford to have either of those repairs done... Is there ANYTHING I can do, chemicals/stop-leak products, etc; or something else to subdue the impending death of my ol' girl (and the beginning of my using public transit)?!

Re: 99 MGM, White smoke = Coolant = Head Gasket/Cracked block

Welcome to the forums.

As far as I know there are no chemicals or fixes-in-a-bottle that can withstand the pressures seen in a cylinder to fix a bad gasket or cracked block. It is more likely the head gasket. Is there coolant in your oil and oil in your coolant? Both may appear similar to a milkshake color.

If it is a head gasket, there is always the option to perform the job yourself. The gasket can be purchased for around $70. If you have some basic tools, basic mechanical skills, and some spare time, you can perform this job yourself by removing the intake manifold and head that needs the replacement gasket. The engine does not need to be removed from the vehicle, either.

Although performing this job can be accomplished as long as directions are followed, it is usually easier to just swap in a new motor. They can be purchased used from junkyyard around $500-$1000 depending on miles and condition of the engine.
