could i run a 255 40 17 on an 8 inch wheel? or is there a chance to mess the bead up?

255/40/17 is 3/4 of an inch shorter than stock. I wouldnt do it.

its wider and ahair shorter, i dont think that much shorter but i dunno. the first number is width, and the second is the ratio of sidewall height and tire width, its gonna shorter but my question is the width gonna be an issue with an 8 inch rim

ok the 255 45s r to tall, im gonna try the 40s. now that i look a them the 40s should be really cloe to the same height

No 255/40's are 3/4 of an inch SHORTER, do the math. They are 10 mm wider which is about 3/8 of an inch.

quackman do not run 255/40's you will severely throw off your speedo. Run the 255/45's if you insist on the extra width. It will only be .3 inches taller.

EDIT. The 255/40's are only 25" tall. The 255/45's are 26" tall. Stock 245/45 are 25.7" tall.

OH! Ok I completely misread your post. I thought we were talking about the width of the tire for some reason (I did have a few cocktails last night ) and thought you were saying the 255's are skinnier (somehow replaced that in my mind for shorter) than the 245's.

I run 255/40s my TT. However, I have a 9" wheel. Personally, I wouldn't run a 255 on an 8" wheel but you can.
