1997 Malibu starts and runs then dies

My daughter was driving the car and it died. I thought it was the fuel pump so I replaced it and the fuel filter. When I tried to start the car, it started and then it shut off like it's out of gas. The fuel pump primes up when you turn the key on, and it primes when the car dies. Any help would be appreciated, I'm at wits end. I got a service manual and checked the ignition switch. When I checked continouity according to the manual, I had no cont. in the accessory location, no cont. in one of the test points in the run location, and no cont. in the start location. Could I have been reading the plug wrong, or is there a chance that the ignition switch is the problem. The switch is hard to turn when it's in the ignition plug, but easier to turn when it's out. If this is the problem, do I purchase the socket that the switch goes in, or does it all come together. Thanks Dan

Sounds like the switch is the culprit .I don't know if the key cylinder and the ignition switch are sold separately but they should be ? The parts guy should be able to guide you in the right direction . Good luck !
