Lets talk gearing... wasn't using 5th at VIR at all.

With a 6500 rpm rev limiter I was maxing out 4th gear in both staights on VIR full. The one trickey area was coming through oak tree. In 3rd I'd be too low in the rpms, but in 2nd I'd be over 6000 coming through. I ended up making my downshift from 4th to 2nd and just letting the motor howl... made for a much better exit speed etc.

These cars have 3.55 gears right? I'm thinking a 3.73 gear w/ a new trans w/ a revised 5th gear would be the ticket. I could come through the slower parts of the course in 3rd and use all of 5th on the high end. Thoughts?

Brain, that's odd, I am shifting into 5th shortly after the tower (south course) on the back straight.

But, I do like the idea of gearing change.
I was up there on Friday, forgot you were going or I would have searched for you.

Were you able to get into UTCC? I didn't get there until Friday around 5:30. We've got the rev limiter set at 6500 and 314 rwhp. I could use 5th, but foud that I could just leave it in 4th. I was running 2:11-2:12s most of the time... what were you running?

Re: Lets talke gearing... wasn't using 5th at VIR at all.

no, I went up to see a buddy and to post some flyers for my motor sale. I was sad that I did not sign up for the event, was a picture perfect weekend, 'cept for Sunday's heat.

My last run at VIR Full was when I still had the overly stiff springs and rear sway -- best time I could muster was a 2:15, theoretical based on TraqMate was 2:13/2:12's - so, times are close.

So are you finding that the mega springs you put in are too much? I've found that I love the rear swaybar.

What do you mean by "theoretical" when talking about the traqmate? I was looking at getting one, does it not measure lap times accurately?

They are 3.50's, the next option is 3.89 on the GTS cars. Your trans might have .82 5th, but could also have a .63 or thereabouts. There are 3.70 sets for the nine inch if you want to get close to 3.73.

3.89 is the ticket with a TKO600RR with the .82 5th....

go with bigger (taller and wider) rear tires too...

the 3.89 gearing works great in the GTS with the TKO 650, as for springs I like 750 front and 450 rears.

If you buy a different ring and pinion, dont forget to get one that is set up for the internal oil pump

Matt,
I'm ignorant of the internal oil pump in the rear end. Is that common to the GTWC and GTRA cars as well. How can I find out how it works? Thanks

Re: Lets talke gearing... wasn't using 5th at VIR at all.

there is an oil pump inside the rear end that is driven by the gears that pumps the oil outside the rear end thru a cooler and back in. TEX racing makes it.

No, the GTRA did not come with a diff cooler fitted as standard. Some cars may have been retrofitted though. To take out weight and negate the need for a diff cooler, I fitted an aluminium centre section case instead.

I would think that a diff cooler would only be needed if you had something other then the open diff the RA cars have.

Jim,
not sure that RA cars had an open diff from the factory. Mine came with a True Trac LSD and the optional 3.5 gears. The True Trac acts like an open gear set if you lift a wheel and turn it but when torque is applied it is a very efficient LSD unit that is perfect for our low C of G cars.

Brian, I was running 2:10-2:11'sat VIR last time I was there in Feb/March

I hit 5th gear about 1/2 way up the hill on the back straight, the front straight i barely used 5th, main reason i shifted into 5th was to smooth/ease the shift back down to 3rd into turn 1....

Hurry up and get your traqmate going and I'll send you some of my files.
