Turned aluminum (???) or P/E bolt heads?

Hey all,

I'm looking for a good source of these. I know RB motion, but i've heard and seen people using stuff from MCG and Detail Master, but I'm a little turned around and confused.

I'm looking to super detail 1/12 F1 kits. I've measured the needs and I've found the largest I'll need is 1mm and it steps down 0.75mm, 0.5mm. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I'm also looking for either brass or aluminum electrical connections in 1/12. (I have some resin ones, but I'd like to try the metal ones.)

Please, no lmgtfy.com sites. If you could please just show me something without the attitude, that would be great.

Hobby Design, Top Studio, Tuner Model Manufactory and Model Factory Hiro all make nice rivet sets.
Try some of the established online stores, like Stradasports and Hiroboy.

Thanks, but I'm looking for rivet heads only (preferably with washers). I don't want to have to drill down into the part every time. RB motion have some, but I want to ask around for others' experiences and what they have found to be good.

Any thoughts?

Here's what I'm looking for...it's the bolts on the valve cover that I'm really wanting (again, preferably without the stem of the bolt). This is from Andy Matthews' site.

Here's a good example of what I'm looking for again, without the stems...

RB Motion's acorn nuts for valve covers are the best I have come across - beautiful pieces.

Scale Hardware also has a very fine assortment of rivets, nuts bolts etc. Good quality, pricing and service in my experience. I can definitely recommend him although I don't know if he carries items suitable for 1/12.

Thanks for turning me on to Scale Hardware. Bob was great about answering some questions about his stuff for me. He even had a pic up of my next project, a Ferrari 641 engine! I knew he had to be decent if he had that!

at 1/12 scale, you could just as easily use hex and circular profile rods to fashion your own rivets, bolts and nuts. It's what i would do.

You think that by doing that it will look as "good" as metal parts? I'm not trying to be a doubting Thomas, just trying to calm my questioning mind. If you have pics, I'd like to see them, just to see what it would look like.

Thanks for the thoughts.

Daniel

There's nothing special about the look of real metal parts. I use a lot of metal in my builds, and very often I paint them because they look better and more in scale when painted then bare. For a small item like a bolt head which your eye essentially registers as a point object, painted plastic can look every bit as good as metal can, and often better.

Do you mind posting some pics for comparison?

Re: Turned aluminum (???) or P/E bolt heads?

Here are some RM Motion and Scale HArdware bolts on a Lotus 25 engine (1/20 scale)

This is a Tyrrell P34 Cosworth engine (1/20) with the molded-in bolts picked out in colour.

it's a very personal and subjective point of view but when I see them next to each other, I think that open engined F1 cars do benefit from the greater realism and detail of the turned metal bolts. But, as I say, very subjective opinion.

Re: Turned aluminum (???) or P/E bolt heads?

I just got some .030" styrene rivets from Tichy Train Group https://www.tichytraingroup.com/inde...ivets&offset=0. They're a LOT cheaper than anything else I've found, and they also carry nuts and bolts.

Thanks, Klutz! That's really what I was looking for. Could you tell me a couple of things--First, are the pieces you used full bolts, or just the "heads"? Second, what sizes were used? I take it the brass were the SH and the other were the RB motion stuff?

I'm going to use some of this stuff for a 312T and Lotus 78, along with the modern 1/12 F1 cars.

Thanks again for all the responses.

Have you used these? Any pics of your work you wish to share?
