Pontiac/Oldsmobile 3.8 engine

Hey, guys im doing my fathers LIM gasket, on his 98 oldsmobile which has the 3.8 engine and when I opened the the gasket set box, there was 3 o-rings with it! Where do they go?
Also I see theres only one plastic elbow to be replaced, is that right? and where do I get this elbow from? zzp doesnt stock or sell just 1 elbow.

2 O rings are for the coolant elbow...and on the 97 and 98's there is another O ring underneath the elbow. the 99 and up were "revised" with another elbow

the elbow can be found at pretty much any parts store. advanced auto parts has the elbow (part#47065) for $3.28.

So if I buy the new elbow, the elbow does not come with o-rings?
Since they came with the gasket set?

Also on this oldsmobile , Im having a hard time getting the lower intake manifold off. Does anybody know how many screws hold this thing down?
I got , I believe 10 bolts off.

Re: Pontiac/Oldsmobile 3.8 engine

As I recall, there are only 10 bolts and after 10 years it's stuck pretty good. Some muscle power or maybe a tap with a rubber mallet will help. Be sure to use the correct torque values when reinstalling.

Re: Pontiac/Oldsmobile 3.8 engine

the aftermarket versions of the plastic elbow(s) come with the o-rings and they normally contain both upper and lower for the newer engines, but the upper is the same for both older and newer and still cheaper than buying the OEM at the dealer.

Wally is correct on the LIM, sometimes they have to be convinced with a soft faced hammer or careful use of a pry bar.

Re: Pontiac/Oldsmobile 3.8 engine

Small soft hammer, or sometimes I've used a screwdrive inside one of the bolt holes and worked it back and forth. The silicone sometimes glues them down.

Don't forget about the EGR stove pipe.

I just did mine last week but didn't use a torque wrench. I just snugged the bolts down real good and went through them a couple of times. I dont' think it's that critical on the waterpump.

Re: Pontiac/Oldsmobile 3.8 engine

Sorry Wally!, I couldn't resist!

The torque specs on the 3800 II waterpump bolts are 11 ft/lbs, and an additional 80 degrees.
