Front Wheel Bearing problem

My 95 GCL has play in the front drivers side wheel area, we jacked it up yesterday, and could move the tire up and down, my mechanic doesnt think its a ball bearing, but a wheel bearing bc the ball joints dont move at all, however i hear this whining noise, and i checked the fluid in the transfer case it was low, but filled that up, still have noise, he says i may need to pick up a new hub, i was just wonderin could this cause the jeep to whine when i accelerate? it whines when i put it in gear, if i put it in reverse i can hear the whine the best, even if i hold my foot on the brake, i put it in neutral and the jeep doesnt make the whine noise, just in gear, it does it in drive whenever i give the jeep gas, im stumpped any ideas?

Try also to check the bearing guide of the pulley. I also experienced whinning sound when accelerating with GCL but it was reduced when i cleaned the bearings with WD40 and put grease as well.

do you remember where your whine noise came from? like the area? mine sounds like the transfer case though.

Re: Front Wheel Bearing problem

Put the vehicle on four jack stands. Use a stethoscope and listen at various points along the drive line. The vehicle has to be in 4wd so you can listen if you have bearing noise.

I put the Jeep in 4 wheel drive, not on the stands yet though, but it seems like the 4 wheel drive works, the vic says that i need to service 4x4 switch, but thats only when i put it in 4x4, and the vic also says that the front two tires are engage, if it was a tc problem wouldnt that only be when i put in 4 wheel drive? i also do have a front wheel bearing problem i just need to replace the hub, the whine comes from the front/center of the jeep, the hub is being replaced on the drivers side in the front

Re: Front Wheel Bearing problem

yes a wheel bearing will give you a whining noise. most of the time - not all the time - the wheel bearing will have play in it, jack the jeep up and grab the top and bottom of the wheel and rock it back and forth - if you feel play it is either the balljoint or wheel bearing, but most likely wheel bearing.
