1996 Olds 88 Starter grinds won't turn over car

Hello,

1996 v6 Olds 88 3800 120000miles. Just started having this issue yesterday where the starter clicks and chugs a little and then will start grinding as if it has come disengaged from the flywheel. new battery, even tried to jump it. is this a starter failure?

Thanks
Doug

Thank It was the starter. The housing was cracked completely off at the gear end.
