96 continental drive belt
1996 Lincoln Continental Serpentine / drive belt :
I'm quite familiar w/ the belt removal & instalation process for the Merc Gr Marquis, Ford Crown Vic & Linc Town Car but, my newly purchased '96 Continental is a COMPLETELY different animal(!!!)-- Got the old belt off, with GREAT difficuly (mostly from underneath the car, where there's BARELY enough room for even MY skinny arms to fit!) Now, I don't know how the heck I'm supposed to get the new one on! I have the routing diagram BUT, there's simply not enough room to work! Do you have to remove a component or two (Pwr Steering Res... Coolant Resivoir[???]) I even checked the Factory Svc Manual, which was no help, & Haynes (usually mostly-useless, anyway) doesn't even make a manual for the Linc Cont! HELP. . . . . Hi,
I had to do mine when I needed to replace the belt tensioner. First you need a belt tensioner tool. Sears sells them for about 30.00, but I am sure Pep Boys or any national auto parts chain will have them. Remove the right front tire when you do this, it makes it much easier. Make sure you use a jack stand to support the car. Be safe!!! It is diffcult to get it around the pulley of the belt tensioner but with the tire off you can get your hands up under there... Thanks for the tip-- especially re: taking off the tire (why the heck didn't I think of that???!!!) Unfortunately (for me) I already got the d@mn3d thing on, before the time I checked your message... Ah, well!-- "...For future reference....", as they say (HEAVEN FORBID[!]) My biggest problem was getting the new belt on (--still not EXACTLY sure HOW I did it[?!]) I couldn't get the serp tool to move the tensioner far enough into the "OFF-tension" position, when putting the new one on, b/c the bar COULDN'T go any farther-- stabilizer-bar / frame, etc, in the way. I removed the serp tool after taking belt off the alternator but, BEFORE removing the entire belt..... Was that my mistake, maybe-- should I have just relieved the tension, then taken the old belt off, with the serpentine tool still in place? Hi Lt.
What I usual do is hold the surpentine tool with a crowbar of something like that to hold off the tension. Try and block it somehow. And take the belt off of one of the pulleys or two then take release the serpentine tool. This works for me. Boy, congrats on getting it done without taking off the tire.
