Re: i think my 3000GT eating up way to much gas?

DOHC means double over-head cam. its just the type of engine in 3s's. it means you have 2 seperate camshafts operating the valves. the numbers he's throwing down are octane ratings. the higher octane rating means that the fuel is more resistant to detonation than a lower octane gas. the compression i was talking about is your compression ratio in the cylinders. since your car has a pretty high compression it needs premium fuel. if you were to not use premium fuel, it would detonate prematurely (i.e. before the pistons and valves are where they're supposed to be in that cycle) and fuck your shit up. this is called 'knocking' and it is bad. the explosion would force the piston down and possibly mess up the connecting rod. severe knocking could even punch a hole in your head or the piston itself. that is something you should hope to avoid. premium is expensive but thats the price you pay to drive a nice car. dont get anything else.

Premium is NOT expensive for cars that need to run it.

For instance, right now in my area 87 is 2.49, premium is 2.79.

For a car like the DOHC 3s that needs premium that .30 extra per gallon only adds up to $6 more on a full 20 gallon fill up. That $6 will be saved because you wont detonate, you wont lose power, and you wont lose gas mileage.

Just filled up the VR4 with premium today at $2.30/gallon. Regular is currently $2.13.
