Crackling Noise from Cat Converter ?
The latest noise from my 85 is a crackling noise from near the cat. It's a random noise, not in rhythm with anything. Revving the engine makes it go away. It comes and goes. I guess it COULD be coming from the trans, since the trans pan is right next to the cat. This is probably something rattling in the cat right ? The trans would not be making noise in idle, right ??

Re: Crackling Noise from Cat Converter ?
If you tap on the Cat with a rubber mallet, you can hear if there is anything loose inside..

I tapped on the cat, and a small chunk of it fell off ! The corrugated cover, that is. So I stopped tapping on it. The mechanic at inspection said he heard some noise from the cat (but passed it anyway), so it is probably the same thing. It just got louder yesterday. I'm 99 percent sure it's that cat, not the trans. |
