What engine do you have? You also need to know if you car came with the Autobahn package. It will have the RPO code JA9 for the bigger brakes that was part of that option if it does. The sticker with that info on it is either on the underside of your trunklid or on the spare tire cover. You could have either a 4T60E (which would have a vacuum modulator mounted on the front) or a 4T65E. The Autobahn package also includes a lower 3.29 final gear ratio which is specific to the Intrigue as far as I know.

Re: 99 intrigue transmission issues

4T60 was not used after 97ish. All Intrigues have the 4T65-E.

Ruley is correct about the Autobahn package though, as I believe it was still offered in 99.

Check your RPO codes for the following 3 digit codes:

code FR9- Ratio, Transaxle Final Drive, 3.29

code F83- Ratio, Transaxle Final Drive, 3.05

That will tell you what ratio you have.

RockAuto lists different transmissions based on whether a 99 Intrigue has a 3.5 or 3.8 engine as well. But I think thats mainly because they show a different gear ratio for the 2 different transmissions.

RockAuto's interactive catalog also seems to list the transmission for the Intrigue as being excluse to the Intrigue. The 4T65 was used in many cars up even until 2005 or so. But apparently there are some subtle differences along the way. I know the transmission has a 4 digit "ID code" if you will, which is one of the things you see when looking up on parts sites, etc.

I wish I could be of more help, I dont know what all the differences in the 4T65-E over the years were, or if they would even be significant enough to make it not work in your car.

In the end it might be more cost effective to have yours rebuilt. Or make sure you get one from another Intrigue of the same class.

I've never seen one first hand, but I thought the 4T60E was still used quite often in 1998 and sporadically in 1999. There is no doubt though that the 4T65E is much more common.

The Autobahn package was offered in 1998 and 1999. It was replaced with the Precision Sport Package in 2000-2002 Intrigues. The latter offered the same lower 3.29 final ratio, H (130 MPH) speed rated tires, the bigger brakes were cut, and StabiliTrak was added.

So, if your car has the lower 3.29 final ratio, you should also be able to use a tranny from the 2000-2002 Intrigues with the Precision Sport package.

The four digit code that LittleHoov mentions is what you want to use to get a perfect match to what you had. It is located on a metal tag on the rear of the transmission case. The gear ratios are the same on all 4T65E transmissions. However, the differential (final) ratios and chain sprocket ratios are the most notable differences with each application (among other things).

Here are some links to charts you may find useful.
