Anyone else remove your fuel cell pickup filter? Any issues?

Last year I removed the screen from the fuel cell pickup filter as we were having wierd starvation issues after runing more than 30 min stints. However, after pulling it off I never got to run the car again because that's when we found that we had a broken swaybar arm.

Then over the winter we've redone the whole car and swapped to a carb. Now with the lower fuel pressure etc. I don't forsee any fuel delivery issues, but we haven't had it on track (will be at VIR this weekend).

Am I at risk of quickly clogging the main fuel filter? The fuel cell foam is in fine condition and not breaking up. The pickup is inside of the pickup box and secured with the pickup screen frame, but again the actual screen has been removed.

Brian, I don't have a screen on the bottom of mine, have had zero issues.

Brian, I wouldnt think the screen was the issue. Look for a tiny hole in the fuel pickup tube. We had wide open starvation and it was a tiny hole in the pickup tube inside the fuel cell.

Brian, if your new fuel pump does not have a screen filter in it, you may risk jamming the pump if the pump pulls up any debris at any stage. Some pumps have built in screens others do not. I have seen a number of rotary type pumps jam due to this type of situation. May never happen, but then again if you have no screens or filters between the tank and the pump..............!?!

I have left the screen on in the tank and my pump (Carter) has a screen in it as well. I filter the fuel again after the pump and before the pressure reg.

If you have your cell open ; look carefully at the pick-up & return lines ... My were rotted to the point of collapse under load ; plus the rotted jacket was pluging the screen w/ small chunks & the in line fuel filter w/ partical sized stuff ; like pool que chaulk ; which is still comming out of the foam ....Replaced them w/ high pressure fuel injection lines & kept the screen in ... The blue lines that were in there are prone to rotting ... I also went to a large canister type filter & carry an extra element ... ( Hope this may Help )

The Hose is Parker 3/8" push lock and should be changed every three to five years per Fuel Safe.Look at he older posts it goes into great detail.

We ended up putting another filter between the cell and pump... all worked fine fuel wise.
