Dude? MPG is great!

When I first got my aveo I checked my mpg and it was 21.3 miles to the gallon. But that is because I drive like a maniac and usually shift over 4000 rpms so I was content. Then I found this sight and read how everyone is unhappy about getting 20-24 mpg on the highway? Well, the next day I decided to investigate and what better way to investigate than on a trip to the snowboard resort (And yes, I CAN fit my snowboard in my car, it was hard but I did it) considering the fact that the roads vary from being extremely curvy and hilly to long flat strait roads, in other words, I drove on a variety of roads that make up most driving that any of you guys would do. It was hard but I forced my self to shift at 2500 rpms on EVERY shift . My average speed was 65 but everyso often I would not be paying attention and I would be going 75, and on the popular roads I would do the speed limit which is 55. I stopped six times and turned the car off once. There was pretty much no wind. ( I do believe I listed all the variables ).

Conclusion: I filled up at the gas tank right before I left on the trip and drove strait back (I used 87 oct). I drove 46.9 miles. The gas needle did not even go down past the "full" line. When I tried filling my tank up the second time the gas trigger stayed down for like a second then popped. I had to pull the nozzle out half way and I managed to get 1.416 gallons in the tank. This means I got 33.12 miles to the gallon. I think you guys just need to settle down a little bit and drive more like grandmas if gas mileage really means a lot to you. I am going to still drive crazy but I am happy to know that if I do ever need to get good gas mileage this little car will pull it off.

Re: Dude? MPG is great!

I agree. The MPG is excellent. I have a 2007 Aveo5 hatchback and I dont have a single complaint. From what i have heard - the suspension has been redone for 2007 and I will be the first to say it's tight and crisp. Feels like a sports car. It turns on a dime and takes all the bumps on the New York City streets with noooo problem. The 2007 also has a nice- much needed arm rest for the drivers side seat.

I bought mine with only the following options: ac, cd player with input jack for an ipod/mp3 player/ premium wheels with rims [not wheel covers] and that is it! I also did not want any future headaches so I dont have the following:
No sunroof [they all leak or get stuck open when its about to rain], no alarm system [they go off for no reason half the time and they DO NOT prevent theft], no power locks [I don't lock my door and again - they DO NOT Prevent theft], no power windows [I have ac/and heat] no need to open the windows. No stupid keychain/alarm FOB - they just stop working as normal after a while, No cruise control - i never use it anyway.

I wanted to makes sure that I have a car with the least amount of electrical gremlins possible. I had a car before with all the bells and whistles and it was just misery and pain.

I tried the Honda FIT and it is a nice car, but it had a wierd hump on the floor in front of the drivers seat...I did not understand why its there...I also tried the Yaris, but the stupid intrument cluster in the middle of the top dash drove me nuts..so Chevy had all the good and none of the bad...at the right price too!

if you'd taken the time to read the post you would see that most of us have tried driving like grandmas.

as i've said before, i'm not the reason for my poor gas mileage... so stop saying i am.

I am SOOOOOOOO jealous! I miss having an armrest. But I could sooooo go for some cruise control. When I go to college this summer I will have to drive 200 miles WITHOUT cruise control . I don't need it for comfort, I need it to keep me from speeding because I will start day dreaming and look down and I am going 80 in a 55. I already have one speeding ticket due to my lack of cruise control. Plus, the chevy dealer told me that they can't instal cruise control on manuals because it is too tricky ?

and TooMuchRock, you should get your car checked or something then cuz if mine gets over 30mpg, it only makes sense that if you have the exact same car you should get over 30mpg too unless there is something wrong with it. Agreed?

its not to tricky for the dealer to install cruise on your car. i have cruise and i have a manual trans. whatever but it is best to get it already with the car because when you do have it installed there will be a wire coming up out of your hood that is exposed because i dont think the mechanics beleive in the whole hole in the fire wall thing. there is on tho in the firewall and it took me forever to find because it is way up under the dash. but thats another story. anywho you can get cruise put in for your car but it will more than likely look ugly. the only real aftermarket thing you cant put on a manual transmission vehicle is a remote starter because of the clutch.

Re: Dude? MPG is great!

I thought I was getting bad MPG until this past week. I put 6 gallons of gas in my car when the gas light first came on. I drove like I always do, highway and city driving. I reset my trip odometer and when the gas light came on again I had drove 220 miles, which is around 37 mpg.

Re: Dude? MPG is great!

Just a note, you can get an armrest from a guy selling them on eb*y. It's not factory perfect but comes close and does its job perfectly well, which includes not hindering the movement of the e-brake. Installs in like 2 minutes flat.

I have 2006 aveo5 5speed LS with air-con with 47k miles.
I had to take a 450mile trip today and I got 34.8 with the air-conditioner on about 75% of the time. It then started getting cooler out side with sun going down so I filled up and made sure that I shifted at no more than 2250 rpm with no air on and had to go thru 8 small towns on 2 lanes and got 39.4mpg. I believe I can make the big 40mpg as I caught myself running 70mph and I had rolling hills.

The aveo 2250 rpm is easy for me to do as I also have a 1.0 liter metro that I do this on.

aveo feels like a SUV with v8 compared to the metro, but it doesent get the 50mpg either.

Re: Dude? MPG is great!

I consistently get 33-36 mpg, of course that's always making sure I drive the speed limit and when going down a hill putting the car in neutral (don't worry, my foot is always on the brake). But other than that, I love my car, 2005 5 speed Aveo. The only bad thing I could mention are the terrible holes we have here in PR, which destroy any type of alignment possible!!

Re: Dude? MPG is great!

OK, I bought my 2006 aveo new and now have 65,000 miles. At first I was only getting about 25 to 30 mpg -- very dissapointed because my 03 ford focus trade-in could get 35 to 40 mpg easy. So I went back to the basics, keep the gas pedal off the floor, shift between 2000 and 3000 rpm, do the speed limit plus or minus 5, inflate tires to the max psi listed on the tires or a couple of psi less than max, change the air filter when needed. I was then able to get 30 to 35 mpg. THE BIGGEST MPG ROBBER TURNED OUT TO BE LEAVING THE DIAL ON DEFROST !!! Leaving the dial on defrost or defrost/heat setting will suck 10% to 15% MPG regardless of whatever you do, it will run the AC pump all the time. With new plugs at 30000 and 60000 miles, I now can get 35 to 40 mpg. Since the sticker rating was 37mpg hwy I really expected to get 40 to 45 mpg. I know the "your milage may vary" bit but my ford was only rated at 32mpg hwy and I could get 40mpg without trying hard. I still like my aveo but I do believe it should get better milage without jumping through all the hoops.
I hope some of these suggestions help fellow aveo owners!

Re: Dude? MPG is great!

Welcome to AF!

With 65k on your 07 have you had the timing belt changed. It is rated at 60k and if it breaks the valves will go through the pistons causing major engine damage. My friend at the Chevy dealership reports that he has seen the timing belts break at around 65-70k.

My Aveo is an 05 with 37k. It has automatic and air. I have a Ford Escort that consistently gets 40 mpg, but with the A/C on it will barely go up a hill without downshifting. The Aveo I am pleased with. I don't even know the A/C is on power wise. It makes it up the steepest hills without down shifting.

I was getting 31 mpg. when the car was new. Since then I have changed the plugs over to NGK Iridium instead of the NGK split-power. I am now getting 37 mpg on the highway. I never expected to get 40 with this car because it has 4 valves per cylinder instead of 2 and because it has dual overhead cams. Both will hurt your gas mileage, but oh I looove the power.

This is the first new car I've ever had that didn't have to go back to the dealer multiple times to get things fixed. I am well pleased with it and expect to have a good relationship with it for a long time.
