New Owner Cabin Filter ?

I know it is supposed to be behind the glove box but the auto store says I dont have one. It was made in July of 98. The wife says she smells something when I hit the brakes. It sat for a year at a lot and is very low mileage and very very well kept. Just wondering about the filter. any help would be great.

I'm pretty sure 2000 was the first model year with a cabin filter.
