1950 Chevy Street Truck

Hello all,
I thought that it was high time that I share with you something that I have been working on. Though I am not working on it full force. This project is something that I pick at while I am stuck with down time on other current projects. Plus it gives me a break when I get too frustrated with the others.
This kit is an AMT 1950 Chevrolet 3100 Deluxe Pickup. Its an older kit that has been out of production for some time now, but I got lucky earlier this year and tracked one down. The idea that I have with this is to build a magazine cover, show stopper style street truck.
Hope you guys will enjoy this build as much as I am looking forward to building it, however like I said it will be a slower build since I only pick at it here and there.




Here are a couple of pictures of the cab. Like I said earlier this is an older kit and it really shows. Many hours has already gone into just “massaging” the cab strait. For some reason (ease of molding Im guessing) the lower parts of the cab are in three separate pieces. But none of the pieces fit, not even close. Other flaws included a lot of flash and very thick mold lines. Though it has been all sorted out, some putty will be needed to finish it up. Other modifications also include shaving of the door handles, gas filler, and the molded in wipers.



Here is MANY more hours of work. I took the time to smoothen out the fire wall of all the molded wire, resistors, and other fire wall mounted items.





A ruff mock up of the cab and bed of the truck. The color that I have in mind, will be a bright pearlescent yellow. Here you can also see that I shaved the center spine trim off the hood to give it a more smooth one piece look.





No Stovebolt strait six here, this truck is getting a big block Chevy instead. I did a quick mock up of the motor with new resin parts. Parts include a pair of high lift valve covers that I will be reshaping, a single plain intake manifold, and a Demon 850cfm carburetor to top it all off.




I will be using a Detail Master aluminum air filter housing. Since the bottom is hollow, I had to make a bottom piece out of Ever Green. At some point I will also be scratch build the K&N style filter element as well.




Here is a mock up of the big block in the engine bay. As you can see I will be have a great time fabricating headers to fit in between the engine and inner fender.




This last picture is just for the pure fun of it. After I finished mocking up the motor I happen to notice the difference in size between the big block and my motor for the Mini. I don’t know, I thought that it was funny.

No straight 6?! Ha! Straight 6 are awsome man! This looks very promising! Great work on the firewall! Pearl yellow sounds like a nice colour for this. What wheels where you thinking of using? Steelies go with everything, this seems like a muscle truck tho, so maybe you want something, um...beefy Good luck with this, looks like it will be great.

I bet in 1:1, that motor weights as much as the fully built mini! lol

Just one thing. I thinking of buying on of those kits and I'm wondering is it worth it?

Mrak: It depends on how you look at it. I bought it online for $35 with shipping. So with that in mind its all in how you look in worth. For me, its one of my dream vehicles so it was a must have. When I bought the kit I knew that it was an older AMT and with AMT's that I have had in the past I was expecting ruff kit. Though I was pleasantly surprised that it was a lot nicer then I had expected detail wise, but there has and will be a lot of work to make it right. This I have come to find other kits from the past. Case in point some of the things that I have talked about so far with the build and other things like over a dozen sink marks in the frame rails of the chassis that I have to fix. I am a very particular person, so things have to be just right or I wont like it and Ill keep working on it till it is. So if it is a subject that you are really interested in doing then I say go for it. Just know that if you want it to look nice plan on doing work. If that doesnt bother you then it has a lot of flaws. Hope this helps.

blubaja: I do agree with you, steelies do go with everything. However that is not quite the look I am going for. I want to do more of a modern street truck look but with out loosing its classic touches. This is more of the look I am after:

Well..if you wanna go all upscale and spend some $. haha! Yea man. Torq thrusts are my 2nd choice for wheel on anything. Heck, mercedes tried it with their c klasse one generation. Great great. That design wheel, in the revell vette agin would go perfect. Pegasus wheels torq design seem a a little big. So hope you find the right ones that suit your tastes.

Yeah Im going to have to play with it a little. You are right about the pegasus in that they tend to be a bit big. However I do have a lot of fender to fill in, so the scale 19 inchers that they make might work. I dont want some thing that will look small cause then it will look more lowrider. I was looking at the Vette Again wheels and Detail Master makes a two piece wheels also, but they dont come with tires. I dont know like I said Im going to have to paly with it.

Before you do anything to the cab, have you seen the Jimmy Flintstone chopped top? They are on ebay from time to time.

Hello all,
So I thought that I would give you all a sneak peek at the wheels that I have chosen for the truck. I received them in the mail a few days ago and I have been wanting to share with you all.

The theme for the truck is that I very much want a 1:1 of one of these. So this build is representing what I would build if I would ever get one. I lucked out a few weeks ago and came across some resin versions of the exact wheel that I had planned for the 1:1. These wheels are Foose Nitrous Thrust II wheels, 19in in the front and 23in in the rear. I hope that you like them because I really do, haven’t decided what color to paint the centers, chrome or something along the lines of a silver gunmetal???? As you can also see I will have to tub out the rear a little to properly fit the new wheels.

Shit yea those rims are great! Try the testors metalizers magnesium. It's like flat gunmetal.
