Re: Panoz goes to Performance Autosport for some go fast stuff...

Mounts: On our A/Sedan car we use the 1990 Mustang Convertible car mount. Auto Zone part. Its a little lower in height than the regular mount (helps hood clearance and CG) AND its a clam mount that wraps the bolt in steel so it can't tear apart. Never tore one..cuz you can't.

I looked at a urethane version of this style of mount but had 2 issues, the cost and the fact that they drop the sump onto the crossmember (we only have approx .25" clearance between the sump and crossmember so CofG is as good as it gets). Hence the bolt mod.

Thats the perfect use for this board. Good job Kel in deciphering my supplied info. I wasn't sure about clearance on the Panoz..so I threw that in there just in case (which proved to be the case).

Re: Panoz goes to Performance Autosport for some go fast stuff...

FYI. There are 2 different style of mounts with these cars. The ones pictured above and then FOX body Mustang mounts. The FOX mounts will not need the bolt through mod like pictured above.

Mine takes the FOX style mounts and I installed urethane mounts after my Napa ones failed with one track event. While they can't tear and let the motor swing up under acceleration, the rubber comes detached from the steel and it will let the engine drop down and sit on the sway bar. If you have FOX mounts and your oil pan is hitting the sway bar, you probably have failed mounts. Use a 2x4 for leverage to and see how they move.

I have the same motor mount that Kel has pictured. If this isn't a fox body mount then what is it? What does the fox mount look like?

I take it I have to pull the mount to do the "bolt mod"?

Kel did you paint your engine block black?

Brian, yes you do have to pull the mounts to mod them. I drilled them on a wee drill press that I have in the shed but they could be free drilled in a vice just as easily.

The block was painted up nicely when I got the car. Seems the short block had been reconditioned not that long before I got the car. I have this in my log book along with reciepts and cost etc. Good thing was that they put in forged pistons and balanced the engine. Not that this matters as I will move onto another short block in the near future. 5th was great but we will need more hp to win the race................

Re: Panoz goes to Performance Autosport for some go fast stuff...

Very interesting... my motor mount is different, my chassis where the mount attaches is different (like Kel's picture) and my steering shaft doesn't have that extra joint w/ the eyebolt thing. Did yours come like that?

If you look at the cut-away Penske car pics you'll see it was set up for these mounts as well.

Re: Panoz goes to Performance Autosport for some go fast stuff...

Here's my setup... just went into the garage. Looking at Kel's I see mine has spacers between the mount and the engine block to raise the motor up some. The rubber blocks are 1.25" thick and there are 3-4 metal plates on the bottom side between the rubber and the metal mount, I presume to give it surface area and spread the load to prevent the bolt from ripping through. They look 100% to me and the shop that did my car builtds CMC cars and road race mustangs on the regular and says they never have issues w/ the motor mounts.

Re: Panoz goes to Performance Autosport for some go fast stuff...

Brian,

You will never guess what kind of car your mounts come off of. 1965 or 1966 Mustang with 289. The spacers you have are to raise the engine up so it doesn't hit the sway bar. My car has shims under the stud on the mount to give the same result. The part numbers are listed on the thread Jim started with all the part numbers.
