I'm a big Jeep guy, but I'm thinking about buying a new vehicle and the only thing that has my interest is the XTerra. I'm not a jeep snob, I know other vehicles can perform just as well. What are the pro's and con's of the XTerras? I've test driven a 2000 w/6cyl, AT, and I liked it overall. It seemed to lack some power but I'm used to the 4.0 High Output on my Cherokee.
As far as mods go, are there lift kits available? I noticed that XTerras have IFS, how well does it perform offroad and how difficult is it to lift? I would only be looking to slap on some 31" or 32" Thornbirds or similar MTs. Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanx Tim |

Pros: Great looks, good stock off-road ability, 2-speed transfer case w/ low range, good towing capacity, available manual transmission, 32" tires fit with little if any help.
Cons: Power is so-so, but adequate. Mileage is pretty lame considering the output of the engine. Independent front suspension limits off-road ability to some degree, also makes lifting expensive. Steering has some flaws that rear their heads when you lift, but there are aftermarket solutions that are just on the market. Aftermarket driveline equipment (lockers, gears, etc) are scarce and expensive, but the situation is slowly improving. Lifts are available from calmini.com, 4x4parts.com, and spencerlowracing.com. Oh, and thornturds aren't MTs by any stretch. They "look" agressive, but that's about it. Get real MTs if you need 'em. |
