The LaSalle. Built by Cadillac from 1927 through 1940. Only car ever built in the USA to be discontinued because it was too successful. (It was out selling the Cadillac and it was embarrasing to the Board of Directors). They attempted to revive it in 1963. A beautiful prototype was made with the LaSalle name all over it. At the last minute, they dropped the idea and gave the design to Buick. Hence - the 1963 Rivera. I have two 1939 LaSalles. An Opera Coupe and a 4 Door Touring Sedan. Both cars have the Very Rare dual sidemounts.

My Dad remodeled a 1977 Corvette when I was a teenager. I was able to help and it started my fascination with classic cars. So, cool vehicle with some history behind it.

I have had a 1964 Sting Ray convertible for 44 years, but I don't consider it a classic, just a good-looking, good driving old sports car. Now a friend of mine (a FORD guy) has a couple of real classics mixed in with the T-Birds, Galaxies, Falcons, etc. He has a 1940 Lincoln Continental coupe and a 1941 Continental convertible. Each is the rarer body style for its year (only 50 '40 coupes were manufactured) and both have the V-12 flathead engine. It makes you feel special, a bit like royalty, to ride in these beautiful cars!

I think those first Continentals were one of those rare cars which enthusiasts recognised as being a classic virtually as soon as they were replaced with a newer design.

Too bad so many had the V12 engine replaced with the flathead Mercury V8.
As I recall, that engine was 305 cubes, with (only) 110 hp, and had problems with wear and sludge directly related to poor crankcase ventilation.

The V12 wasn't so bad, but it was basically just a flathead Ford with 50% more cylinders and power. Most of the problems arose when owners tried to drive them as they looked like they should be driven. And perhaps it was hard to turn down a challenge from a Cadillac Sixty Special or a supercharged 812 Cord. The Dearborn V12, originally made on a budget for the mid-price Zephyr line, was not the equal of the earlier KB Lincoln straight-eights for sustained high speed operation.

Some owners put Ford engines in, and maybe the reduced power caused them to change their driving habits. In the early fifties Cadillac OHV V8's were very popular transplants, and would really make the Connies fly. By the mid-sixties most enthusiast owners were putting V12s back in their cars. Modern lubricants, gaskets, belts/hoses, etc. and decades of accumulated assembly and maintenance knowledge has increased their longevity and reliability.

Ferrari 250 series is my favorite, but I also love the typical american classics...stingrays, AC cobras, shelby Cobras, and 67-69 Camaros/Firebirds. I'm not too into classics, but those are my favorites.
