AC not cycling
Hello.
I have a '95 3.1L w/ ~150K mi. I noticed that my AC compressor does not cycle. I have tried in all 3 AC settings...."Max", "AC", and mixed floor and upper vents. I just added a can of 134a and was testing to see how cold the AC could get. The ambient temp that day was ~75F. I ran the AC on "Max" for 10 minutes or so w/ the windows up. I then turned the thermostat all the way over to the hottest point to where nothing but hot air was blowing. I then checked under the hood and the AC clutch was still engaged. I thought this was maybe b/c the AC was still on "Max", so I then tried the other 2 AC settings w/ the thermostat still on the hottest setting and the AC clutch was still engaged. Can anyone comment as to whether this is normal? If not, then where shall I start trouble shooting? Thanks. |

Have you tried to turn the switch to off and see if the clutch dis engaged? From what I have seen if the a/c is on, the compressor clutch should run continuously until the return psi is low enough that it causes the low psi switch cycle the clutch, It is possible that you may have over charged your system. does the inside get cold? is the return line cold and sweating?

Your V-5 compressor on your W-car is designed NOT to cycle- is is a variable stroke compressor- it averts freeze-up by reducing the compressor displacement to nearly zero when necessary. Been this way since the inception of the V-5 in 1984....The W-cars have had Varible systems for nearly 20 years. So who ever is telling you it should cycle is living in the past.. needs to update his knowledge base!
Non-cycling systems are considered a luxury, in that you don't have to hear that continuous clutch engagement noise. You can prove this to yourself by looking on the low side line, there is NO cycling switch- anywhere-- Just a high side pressure tranducer..... So don't try to fix it if it is not broke..
