has anyone here ever driven a "three on the tree"? Those things were a pain in the ass. from '84 to '88 they had 4+3 trans. in vettes. As for me, I've got the best of both worlds...my '79 vette has an auto with a shift kit, while the ZR-1 has a six speed. The ZR-1 is more fun to drive, but the '79 is great for cruising

I drove a "3 on the tree" once when I went to visit my uncle, he has one in an old pickup, and let me say, it was hell, i couldnt get used to it, kinda confusing i found, like up and towards the dash was 1st i think then second was down and back, can't even remember where all the gears were. ugh, I think i probably ruined it, all I heard was alot of grinding (I don't think there were syncros either)

Yes I had 3 speed transmissions in my Hudson and Rambler. In my Jaguar and VW's I had 4 speeds and my Porsche had a 5 speed. The 85 Corvette had the 4+3.
I count that as 7 speeds. The beauty of that tranny is that you can spend years describing it. It was more than just a 4 speed with a overdrive. It would downshift and upshift automatically and manually too.

Yea sure.

Wow, that's almost a new record for bringing a dead thread back.

Manual FTW.

Yes, you can change transmissions, but it is difficult and expensive and the general consensus is that you are better off just buying the vehicle with the transmission you want in it.

Closed. If someone thinks this should not be closed, either PM me or start a new, updated 2009 version.
