Just 16, picking 1st car
Well i have just turned 16 and parents have givin me $3,750 to start out. I am paying for gas and repairs while they pay insurance.
Im wanting to know what a good car would be? im looking for something sporty but yet not a pain in the ass to pay for. My dad wants me in a Ford Escape but im wanting more of a camaro/mustang/vette etc. I helped my uncle work on his 1967 corvette stingray and i absolutely love it! is there any cars along those lines that i can get for cheap that wont require much to get it going? Cargo space wont be necessary, only thing i will be taking in it would be at max my baseball gear but thats it..no problem for a back seat. Any help you can give me will help tremendously. Thanks |

You mentioned having $ 3750 to start out , do you mean that's the amount of money you have to buy the car or the amount of down payment to be used in purchasing a vehicle ? Either way , that's nowhere close enough to the amount needed to buy the 1967 Corvette ( or any similar vehicle ). In fact , at age 16 , that's probably what you'd be paying yearly for insuring such a car . I would trust Dad ( and Mom ) to help you make the right decision on what car to buy . It will be your first car but certainly not your last . The type of cars you desire will be available for you in the future when you are older and wiser . For now be happy to have any car and later after you have your education completed and have that good paying career , you can get the car of your dreams ! Good luck !

Re: Just 16, picking 1st car
yeah after checking insurance on some cars and how they will price out down the road i have figured that those sports cars arent going to happen. So whats a car that looks sporty but wont have the huge insurance bug like a vette/camaro/mustang will have? Ive looked at some honda civics and they look alright.
Anything you guys can recommend? |

Re: Just 16, picking 1st car
Ive been looking at the toyota celica, sebrings, civics, and eclipse and ive gotten pretty interested in those. Ive tried google to see if they can say if its considered a sports car or not but no such luck.

Re: Just 16, picking 1st car
Most 2 door cars are considered a sports car and the insurance is very high on them. Also there is no such thing as a cheap car under a thousand anymore, most yards bought them taking off the cat, wheels off and putting them in the crusher running or not

Re: Just 16, picking 1st car
Since you are 16 and just starting out the best thing to do is to get an inexpensive, yet durable vehicle for your first and possibly second vehicle ( when the time comes for #2). That way you can save your money in the meantime to put towards something more sportier, fancier, etc. Also in a few years, your insurance rate will start to decrease if you keep from getting tickets or into accidents. There are many places to find vehicles in your price range such as classified ads or even your family. There are online resources to help you determine values and even research owner's opinions on the vehicles. There are vehicles in the 7 to 10 year old age range that should fit your needs within your price range.
