1996 Radio comes on and off and on and off

Hello, this is my first post here on your forum. I have found great info about my own car, now my Dad asked me today if I could find out what his radio problem is. He has a nice 1996 Silverado half ton that he bought new and looks as good as the first day he brought it home. Living in Ohio, that means a lot of winter time washes. His factory radio started going off after driving at no particular intervals. Sometimes it stayed on all the time, but usually it would work for 5 minutes then go off then randomly come back on. He decided to buy an aftermarket Pioneer with an adapter kit made for the truck. It works fine. But, the Pioneer has one knob that controls everything, that is kind of hard to get use to and lacks the volume ability that the factory radio had that would go up as he increased his speed. Everything else in the truck works fine and since the new radio stays on, at least we know it is not a problem with the ground (at least outside the old radio). Any suggestions?

try reinstalling the old original radio...if it repeats powering off on its own find a scrap yard replacement..

the internal componets are top secret....only a GM repair facility can repair at a cost that will make you understand why GM has lost market share...

Good one. I'll suggest that, I also read it could be something to do with overheating and maybe stick a 12v source to the radio outside the truck and see if it does the same thing. About getting a yard radio, he told me that there is some security lock or something that may make it hard to use a radio from a junkyard. Any ideas on if this is right. Thanks for input.

most do not use the radio security lock..this is for just the radio...not many theives look to steal this type of equiptment..

I would expect the scrap yards will ensure the radio was not locked...

on the install of the other radio you always use an adapter connector to connect to the OEM radio connector of the vehicle..

never cut off the oem connector...this is how many have had many problems....connections shorts etc...
