Random Ticking Noise.

Hi all. I have used the search function and still couldn't find anything like my problem so here goes.I just got my Jimmy home from the shop TODAY after having the tranny replaced. I knew it was baked and I knew the cost going in and that's not my problem. I have this random ticking/clicking(still).By random I mean it does not stay in tune with the motor. It sounds like it is coming from the midway point of the vehicle. It makes this noise at startup and when you take off(sometimes) The mechanic does not know what this is and said that he in fact had checked the flywheel for cracks/damage and there was none while replacing the tranny. Several people have run along side of me as I took off and noone seems to know what it is.Sounds almost like a BB or nut or something rolling around somewhere. Many suggestions from protective shrouds to catalytic converter to something with my 4x4. If anyone has any suggestions please respond.
4.3 replaced in 2006.106K Kms on rebuild.
All balljoints/right side wheel bearing/pitman arm replaced during tranny work. The motor runs flawless.I like this truck(obviously) but she is starting to hurt the wallet.

Regards.

Re: Random Ticking Noise.

Was the ticking noise there before the trans was replaced?

Re: Random Ticking Noise.

Yes it was.Obviously I was hoping that it was the bad tranny. The new tranny is working great but that annoying clicking persists,

Regards.

Re: Random Ticking Noise.

I know you said that you replaced the right wheel bearing during the Tranny rebuild. But I assume that means the left one was good.
Does this noise happen at idle?
Does it go away at certain speeds?
Does it come back at higher speeds?
Does the sound go away during a right turn? A left turn?
If you run it on a freeway and go through a high speed right curve or a high speed left curve do you notice any difference?

I fought a similar noise for months and finally found the culprit on a freeway curve, the noise stopped. I replaced both front wheel bearings and the problem was solved.

Re: Random Ticking Noise.

Check the U-joints. If one is dry the needles will click and resonate through the drive shaft. A quick inspection of the joints would include a cap with rust showing around it. Otherwise pull the shaft down and look for a stiff or loose condition. Usually you will here a chirp or squeel if bad. Also a drive line vibration at certain speeds would be an indcator.

Please start a new thread with your problem, and we'll help you as much as we can. Continuing in this thread will simply cause confusion between you and the original thread starter. Can you describe with a little more detail what you are experiencing, such as what area the sound seems to be coming from, type of sound it is, etc. There are lots of things that can make a general ticking sound, such metal parts striking each other, an exhaust leak, or loose fasteners to name a few.
