Loud Humming Noise
Recently i have started to get a loud humming noise on my 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix. I took off the front tires and noticed the inner cv boot on the drivers side was almost split into two. I replaced the boot and and checked the bearings on that side and they were fine. Everything looked ok. I drove the car after and the humming was still there. The noise gets louder as i drive faster and it stays constant when i drive straight and turn left. When i turn right the noise goes away. Any suggestions???
Also the car has 185000 kms |

Re: Loud Humming Noise
How did you check the bearings? It sounds likes the one of the front hub bearings is bad.

Re: Loud Humming Noise
I agree with Bob that it sounds like a bad front hub bearing. You have all the common indicators of one.

Re: Loud Humming Noise
Right front wheel bearing. Sometimes you can get the front wheels off the ground and spin them by hand while holding onto the strut spring. The side you can "feel" the noise through the spring is the side that is bad.

Re: Loud Humming Noise
Yea I jacked the car up and grabbed the top and bottom of the tire and there was movement. So its gotta be the hub bearing. Thanks guys

Re: Loud Humming Noise
HELLO. How many miles did you have on your bearing when it went bad? I have an "06" GT with 28k mi. Just wondering how long the bearings last. What was your cost? Thanks for for any information.

Re: Loud Humming Noise
you can expect anywhere from $80 on up to a couple hundred dollars. Definetely do not get lesser quality bearings as they do not last!
Ive seen them go bad as early as the 30k mark and I have also seen them last well bast the 150k mark. Its just a crap shoot as far as when. IMO don't worry about it until they start to either get sloppy or start making noise.
