97 Suburban fuel pump issues, questions

I have a GMC 1/2 ton 2 wheel drive 5.7 suburban with 180,000 miles. I bought it reasonable at 165,000 miles and replaced the intake gaskets and upgraded the FI unit. I drove it about 20 miles and the fuel pump locked up. I replaced it with a Bosch fuel pump. I have since put about 5000 miles on it and got back fom a 600 mile round trip Sunday nite and parked it in th garage. Monday morning it wouldnt start. It would turn over but wouldnt fire. I poured an ounce or so of fuel down the throttle body and it fired right up for a second. Had my wife turn it over while I smacked the gas tank with a rubber mallet and it fired right up again and has worked ever since. I can remove and return the Bosch for a free replacement bosch pump but could I have done something wrong or are bosch pumps unreliable?
Thanks,
ccnova
