1996 transmission, need I new one

I have a legacy outback, manufacture date of 9/95, I am told the cut of date is 5/95. What is the actual difference in the transmission. I am told by a friend that it will bolt up. Is the spline?shaft? that goes into the motor different, Or is the an electronic/electric connection difference? The gearing is the same,411. I have a legacy transmission, pre 95 to put in.my Transmission code is:Ty7592vabca
Thanks for any help out there. Dann
