I've been working on my '92 Chevy Corsica which I've had for quite some time now.
My newest problem is that the car stalls during left turns. This problem is not dependent on speed or gear. The wheel is very difficult to turn left and the turn causes stalling almost as soon as the wheel is turned. This problem started as soon as I fixed my last problem. The last problem was that the radiator fan would not come on because the ECU was not responding to the temperature sensors. So, I put a toggle switch in to avoid having to go thru chevy to get a new chip. During test drive is when this stalling problem started. I'm wondering if I could have accidentally pumped a wire the wrong way or something and now the steering column is catching on a wire???? Or maybe the power steering pump has gone out???? I don't really know what to check first and nobody I know has ever dealt with this... Any help would be much appreciated... Thank you. |

Re: car stalls when turning left
Since this issue began as soon as you wired in a switch for the fan, you should start by re-inspecting every inch of added wiring to see if you are shorting something out when turning the steering. Does it stall just like the key is turned off, or does it act like it's bogging down the engine just prior to the stall?

Re: car stalls when turning left
Could be a problem with your fuel pick-up.
Does it do this with a full fuel tank? |

Re: car stalls when turning left
Actually, when i did my test drive when this problem started, I put some gas in but its only about half full. I haven't tested it with a full tank.

Re: car stalls when turning left
The fuel pick up suggestion was a very good one, but half a tank was probably sufficient to say it's not a pick up problem.
Have you checked for any diagnostic codes? Your '92 can probably be read using a simple jumper wire and the Check Engine Light. I think GM fixed their bad Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensors by '92, but that would be something to check as well. Tap lightly on the MAF with the handle end of a screwdriver or similar and see if that causes any perturbations with the engine. Also inspect the intake air tubing to see if it may be getting stretched if the engine rocks from a bad engine/transmission mount. -Rod |
