I have a 96 Dodge Caravan that is having trouble with dying. While I'm driving, it will just kind of chug a little bit like it's not getting gas, and then it dies completely. Sometimes, I will just be coasting when it dies, and at other times it will die while I'm waiting at a red light. When the light turns green, I press the gas, but it dies. This can get pretty frustrating with impatient drivers behind me.
I've noticed that this usually only happens during the day, when it is HOT..ish (50+ degrees fahrenheit) and the car has been parked in the sun for a while. During the morning and night, it doesn't seem to have this problem, so I think it might have something to do with daytime heat. With the days getting hotter and hotter, i'm pretty worried about it, and I dont want to spend a lot of money. If you have experienced this same problem or know what the problem could be, please help!! |

Re: 96 Dodge Caravan dies in the heat
Welcome aboard! Could be something as simple as a loose/corroded connection on a sensor or module. Could be a something as elusive as an intermittent sensor or module failure.
Might try inspecting all the engine sensor connections for security, corrosion, pushed/bent contacts. Pay particular attention to the crankshaft, camshaft, throttle position and manifold absolute pressure sensors. They are infamous for causing stalling and sage or stumble. Are you seeing the service engine soon light? Autozone will connect a scanner and read your fault codes for free in most states. I'm leaning away from a failing fuel pump. Generally they will rear their ugly head when under load such as when accelerating, driving up a hill, or at higher speeds. Stalls while coasting go against that call. At this point though you sure can't count it out. Which engine? When this started was any maintenance performed just prior?
