Re: What are you doing right now.....

Desktop's have their place. My wife has one. My two year old has one. I just built another one for my 4 year old last month. I have one. I've also got one that I built and connected to my home theater, it will play absolutely anything, and the instant movies from netflix are great. When it comes to work and websurfing I use my two laptops about 95% of the time.

Re: What are you doing right now.....

I've got several desktops at home, but no laptops anymore. Sold the old ones and need something new now for traveling/work.

Re: What are you doing right now.....

Yeah I'm lucky if I use my desktop once a week any more. I'm either on my son's because it's in a convenient location, or a laptop.

Re: What are you doing right now.....

Why does you daughter have to move to the printer to print something. You can set up your network to share a printer on another computer.

Re: What are you doing right now.....

I know. It.s on my list of "things to do" The computers aren't even networked yet. I was thinking of going wireless for the printer. What she does sometimes , and yes I know it's archaic, but it's easier right now, but she will send me what she needs printed in an email , then I open it on my desktop and print it from there as that is where the printer is hooked up.
I'll probably get around to it once I finish remodeling my bathroom.

Re: What are you doing right now.....

Since we are on the subject of printers... Any ideas why two vista machines would keep losing a printer on the network? I keep having to set this bastard up for my parents computers and it's driving me nuts... I can't wait till I can scrap vista and give them windows 7...

It only takes a few minutes. Use the set up wizard, save the setting on a jump drive and then go around and plug it into each computer.

Set it up as a local printer, but for the location use the printer's network address.

Really... They just need a printer with a network card in it. Right now this thing is connected to my dads PC via USB and my mom's PC keeps the printer on there but it doesn't print things. They just pile up in the queue. Clear it all out and try and it never goes. Test pages, nothing. Delete the printer and re-add it and then it prints fine. I donno what the hell is up with it. I want them to get a new printer so I can just plug it into the switch and eliminate this problem.

Re: What are you doing right now.....

When it quits, have you checked to see if the computers connect at all? It might be a network problem rather than just the printer.

Yeah, I checked everything out. I can pull files from one PC to the other with no problem and both are still connected to the rest of the network with no problems. It's almost like her PC is loosing rights to use the printer or something. When I set up the printer each time, it needs the username and password of the PC the printer is connected to. I thought maybe that had something to do with it, but it seems to just randomly hit when it stops working. Doesn't make sense to me that it can work all the time I'm around and then quit working when I'm not there...

What I thought at first too... Till I came and tried it and it wouldn't work for me either. Either they are changing something somehow and not telling me or Vista is a bigger mystery than the Bermuda Triangle...
