1996 jeep grand cherokee limited shifting problems!

Hey i just recently purchased a 1996 jeep grand Cherokee limited and i just got a new battery ( i didnt think this was going to help the problem) but when i start her up and wait a bit and put it into reverse it takes about 5 seconds to actually go into reverse and move but in the 5 seconds when i press the gas it just rev's like its in neutral and sometimes it even gets in reverse and stalls, this also happens in drive when i go to a lower gear.

Any help would greatly be appreciated

Also the interior lights do not work none of them do should i change the bulb or fuse?

**UPDATE**

I just found out today that my jeep isnt shifting to second get it just rev's really high and the washer sensor is bad and coolant sensor is bad also but the coolant sensor doesnt come up on the computer and stay on it sometimes goes and comes.

and when i shift to 4wd low it makes an awful sound of gears grinding what could this mean?
