Tranny problem or engine problem???

Yesterday my 95 grand am started to stutter and I thought it could be the tranny because i could rev the engine in neutral with out any stutter. I got to a gas station and checked the tranny fluid and it was a little low so i bought a quart of tranny fluid and put it in. Then I realized it was the wrong kind of tranny fluid. I got it towed to a buddys house and dropped the tranny pan and drained out all the fluid and put new fluid in. It is full of the right kind now and it is still stuttering. This morning there was a bit of a knocking that i heard but i couldn't tell where it was coming from. I have been told it could be the o2 sensor or the fuel pump. What do you think. Thanks.

Re: Tranny problem or engine problem???

dropping the pan only gets out 1/4 to 1/3 of the fluid. What kind of wrong fluid did you add? Your problem is not the transmission.

Is the SES light on? Any codes? Check the fuel pressure. If you don't have a scan tool, just unplug the upstream O2 sensor and the problem should go away if it's that (but I doubt it is)

Check the plugs/wires, and MAP sensor

Welcome to AF pat8424 !

Your engine size and aprox mileage would help diagnose this issue.

But with stuttering/stumbling could be several things.
Your ignition system, plug & or wires if you have those, coil(s), ICM could have a bad component.
Bad/dirty injectors, dirty/clogged fuel filter, bad fuel pump.
A faulty/dirty MAF sensor can also cause this, if you have a MAF.

And on putting the wrong fluid in the trany.. Depending on what type you put in, you might need it flushed to properly remove all the old/contaminated fluid.
Though using the wrong trans fluid is not as serious as puting oil or brake fluid(yes Ive seen it) in there.

Do you know when your last tune up was (plugs/wires) ?
